Water cooled conversion?

Post by chw79 »

Hi, I'm new to the forum.

I've just been given a T25 Caravelle. It is pretty solid throughout, has a factory steel sunroof and deserves to be brought back to life!
I'm having a bit of a problem deciding which engine route to take. The original 1600Ct is long gone, only the gearbox remains. I guess the simples thing to do is replace it with another...but, I have a very good 2.0 ADY engine out of a Sharan in my garage complete with loom and accesories. Is a water cooled conversion a waste of time on this vehicle? Will I spend more going down this route than just forking out for a decent s/h CT?

Any advice very gratefully received!

Chris.

In a word no

But be prepared for £££ to get it working, the gearbox, radiator and pipework will be eyewatering. :D
Fitting a 2.0L CU will be less expensive

And is 2.0 CU much better than a CT? I can't seem to find either advertised second hand in working condition complete with the ancilleries, are they hard to come by?

Well I guess that answers my question!
I think the ADY is going to be too much work, I can see the van becoming a permanent fixture in my garage if the conversion is as complicated and expensive as it sounds!
Am I right in thinking that the problem with the CT is that it is under-powered? Or is it something else?
Will the CU be OK with my original 4 speed gearbox?
What should I be willing to pay, for a decent one complete with tin ware etc.?
