The pushrods ideally should be kept in the same location but in reality you will be fine mixing them and turning them upside down as long as you do the adjustment

The setting sequence is in Haynes manual page 2b.18

Get no1 cylinder at tdc on compression, to do this rotate the engine clockwise ( as you look from the back) until you have the rotor arm pointing at the notch in the dizzy body and no 1 lead on dizzy cap ( this assumes dizzy is in right it should be if 1 and 2 are firing)

Remove rocker covers and slacken the no1 cylinder rocker locknuts and back off adjusters clear of valves, screw them back until they just touch then two further turns and lock with the nuts.

rotate engine clockwise half a turn and do no 4
repeat for 3 and 2

no 1 is front of vehicle right as you look from the rear, 2 is back vehicle right, 3 front left, 4 back left

do this then repeat the compression test
while you do it when the adjusters are backed off give each push rod a shove to see if the tappet compresses at all, if it does then its drained down

Thanks Paul for that I would be lost with out that info. So just to clarify when turning the screw back just so it bites the valve I turn it back two more turns and are they full 360 turns or just 180 turns?

Thanks
Steve

Full 360 turns after it just touches
youre not the first to get confused by this
a turn is 360 if you think about it, its just your wrist does not move 360 so you have to do a turn in two halves

Great your getting there :ok
double check you have the leads on right counting clockwise on the dizzy cap 1432
3 is front of the vehicle 4 is rear
need to get the batt on charge for several hours minimum really

Well she's running and sounds amazing new plugs today and adjusted valves again but only by 1.5 turns rather than the 2as found this too much and she wouldn't run. Only thing left to do is flush oil a few times bleed the cooling system and off for mot oh and sort the rocker cover leak out as it's been off and on so many times new gasket there I think.

Thanks again Paul.

Well today I rang a garage Martin hill motors in callington who happened to have a slot for an mot @ 15.15 this afternoon so my wife drove her to the garage as followed in the car expecting to leave her for a couple of days so we dropped her off and the chap from the garage said see you in an hour so we returned an hour later only to have an mot certificate sat waiting in the office with only 2 advisories one rear tyre cracking and off side front wheel bearing has slight play so another good day for dolly at an expense of only £55 not bad :ok
