If its ok (unlikely if its original) - just clean and regrease when you're getting stick repaired.

Thanks again CovKid. Found a local guy who has done some work on a friend's van who will take a look for me. Got the lever out this evening and will take it to him tomorrow - hopefully for welding. Plastic bearing looks pretty tired, so I'll be ordering a new one.

Have just finished reading the step-by-step instructions for dismantling and refitting - excellent.

If you can afford it buy a new gear lever instead. That's what I'd do!

Yep, I know what you mean, and it may come to that if this one can't be welded. It's just a lot of money when I've only just bought the van. However, I can hear the words 'false economy' somewhere in the back of my mind...
