I have a different engine so not sure if the same applies or not but my BOD went off recently because the cable had become damaged and it was shorting on the metal work. Like a muppet I automatically poured in some oil (which of course it didn't need) and then disappeared in a cloud of smoke as I drove off. (Drained off the excess oil, taped the cable and all was fine.)

You need to loosen the cam sprocket..can you get the flywheel to top dead center?

All as per the book, yet when i try to crank by hand, it is a no go, only forward or backward a little?

Just checked the pump cog and this is how it is......arghhhhhhhhhhh

Where to next, how to get this in the right setup!

That flywheel isn't at tdc it should look a bit like this I v I you need to line the pointer up with the v on the clutch cover plate.did you take the belt off?

Yep, belt off realigned pump gog, all in line, as far as the flywheel, that mark (red between an indent between three teeth) you will see if you look closely some dotted lines either side and is the only marking i could find on the fly wheel.

I will check again though, as old age muddles the brain and we are going through a bit of an heatwave at the moment. Will get back to you asap.

p.s. no change on cranking, goes nearly one full cycle then stops, mo matter how hard i try to turn it???

Leave the flywheel where it is in your picture and turn the cam 180deg [belt off]

Not sure if fully understand that part, if i rotate cam 180 i cannot lock it off? Are you sure :? I will try anything.......

Okay tried that but no joy, felt like it was hitting a brick wall when trying to crank it either way by hand, a few degrees and knock, turn the other way and knock, would not budge?????????????

If as I fear i have a naffed engine, what are the alternatives in the 1.6Td range, straight exchange or at least very minimal work to put in?

If your sure that the number one cam lobes are pointing up you need to check that number one piston is at tdc...take number one injector out [youll need a new flame trap for when you re-fit the injector] get a long bit of stiff wire and put in the injector hole so it touches the top of the piston, then slowly turn the engine one way or the other so the wire moves up,when its at its highest point that's approximately tdc [belt off, dont lose the wire down the hole]

Ok,to check for bent valves etc take the cam off, take the cam caps off starting from the middle, just let the cam sit on the cylinder head [belt off]and see if you can turn the engine 360deg!!

This is the timing mark you need to alighn the crank its on the clutch pressure plate not the flywheel.
