Radius rod chassis mount repair???? pics...

Post by toomanytoys »

Hi
I cant recall seeing anyone offering a replacement part or repair panels for the radius rod mounts on the chassis of a 2wd..

Anyone know of anything??

I have a customers van in and the holes are rotted and delaminating to the extent that the 3 layers of steel that make up the panel that are maybe 5mm thick normally, have expanded to 15-20mm..
The radius rods have moved up through the rust about 20 mm too and the bush that sits on the radius rod has completely rotted away...

I will have a couple of pics later.. well worth people having a check of this area as its quite critical to handling and braking and the last thing anyone needs is collapsed suspension..

Pics...
Dismantled and exposed.. the bush that normally is on the rod covering the threads was virtually non existent
Image
separated the layers of metal and was in reasonable shape away from the rust hole..

Repair plates made from 4mm steel plate. Hole location taken from a good radius rod mount.. once welded (TIG) the hole will be opened up to the 32mm size for the bush to fit in.. left it slightly undersize in each plate to allow correction for any alignment issues when welding them in.. prob going to drill 3 or 4 small holes in the back plate to allow a plug weld through to the front plate.. should tie them together nicely..

Seen this before chap.. I did think about getting some 5mm plates made up with the correct hole in the middle.. They could then be seam welded into fresh metal. It is scary when you see how a radius rod starts to act as a saw!

We have a repair for them, but not something we can sell.
More and more vans are corroded that we get in the workshop, did my worst one ever the other day, nasty job.

Well.. I could.. but depends on worse case rust scenario.. Then.. its a case of cutting away the rot to good metal and then cutting the plates to suit..
As you can see.. the front plate didn't need to be so large.. but the back needed to be as the back layer of steel was quite thin....
Front repair plate is "let into" the good metal and will be seam welded in.. as will the back plate..

Dunno.. maybe Mr Baxter can pass judgement of dimensions of what he has seen??

I have another customers van waiting in the wings and It looks like the same repair will be needed....
