Changing coolant in the system

Post by gypo »

I looked today and I think my coolant could do with renewing. Is it much of a job and does any one have any tips on doing it, flushing it out etc? I do recall you need to raise the back of the van up but that about it.
Cheers

You don't need to raise anything.

How long would you say it would take, just so I know how much time to allocate to it?

Start to finish assuming you have no problems getting the hose off the rad, and you flush the old stuff out.

Garden hose, with a rag wrapped round the end to make a snug fit. Maybe a jubilee clip if you can be bothered, but just wear wellies and prepare to get a bit wet. When I did mine I did it all from the engine bay - I disconnected the long pipes that go to the radiator and flushed both ways, and also round the engine by connecting in the other direction, if you get what I mean - I disconnected 2 pipes so there were 4 places to push the hosepipe into.

Oh, and I also removed both water tanks so I could flush them out and give them a bit of a scrub with a bottle brush. I found a fair bit of silt in the bottom of the header tank.

How much antifreeze (coolant) did you put back in?

Just under 9 litres - see this thread. I struggled to get even the 9l of concentrate in after flushing, because it's difficult to drain down completely. That's why it's important to flush it properly - you need to be sure that what's left in the pipes is plain water, so that when you add your 9l of coolant you'll be at a 50:50 mix.
