Whats the best way to clean up a very dirty high top

Post by David Riordan »

Hello Club 80-90 members. I have just joined the forum so i hope I'm posting in the right spot.
I drive a 1987 leisure drive high top. The hightop on it has become very dirty and its proving very tough to clean.
Does anybody know the best way to get this dirt off? Is it possible to paint these high tops?
Any info would be great.
Cheers.
Dave

I used some oxalic acid on mine... have a look at this vid http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IER1gzjLizM" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

It can be pretty nasty stuff if inhaled or in your eyes, so wear protective glasses and a mask. Mine was very dirty and this really helped to loosen it, I still needed a little elbow grease but it came up sparkly... about a tenner from ebay IIRC, plus the cost of a cheap sprayer from B+Q .

Apparently its not toxic to flora or forna either which is good !

I too have used Jif/Cif or whatever it's called now. Works well although my Westie Pop top needed a good bit of scrubbing because of the dimpled surface.

After cleaning, what polish would work well to stop it getting so dirty again? Autoglym wax? I seem to remember somebody saying Nikwax (for outdoor gear) was good? Bri

Tfr (traffic film remover) from most good motor factors. Water it down to about 1 part Tfr to 10 water. Great for wheels too. Afterwards use autoglym super resin polish ;)

A good wash followed by Tcut UPVC restorer (and a bit of elbow grease!) followed by a good marine wax for boats. Came up a flippin treat and transformed the van :D
