Gearbox replacement

Post by andyh10 »

Hi there

i just removed my old gearbox.relativley painless too, im sure getting the new one in wont be as easy. the box i removed is a 4 speed code is 091 301 211 A. I already have a replacement box, but the now that the old one is out i realise they are different. new box code is 091 301 211C. found another code on it DY 17013. It has a different front where the mount attaches and also the gear selection rod is further back.

is this a big issue? obviously im going to need a new rear linkage rod, and mount. is there anything else i need to be thinking about when i put the new box in?

the one with the 3 bolt mount is an Aircooled box, the one with 4 bolt mount is a watercooled box, DY is off the top of my head a diesel box so not very good with a petrol engine

I've got a 1.6 diesel so this would suit. may be a rookie question but what difference does it make to the gearbox if its water cooled or air cooled?
Any idea where i get a suitable rear linkage rod and mount for the new Box?

What strikes me is the 'dream-like' quality of the photos, like the soft focus they used on Yeoman Rand in Star Trek - or have you fallen in love with these two gearboxes and need to be left alone for a while :D

The difference is the year the van was made. Early vans whether Aircooled, water cooled, petrol or Diesel used the 091 gearbox (the dirty one in you picture).
Later vans used the 091/1 gearbox (the clean one)

i can safely say i have no love for one of these box's. the other lets wait and see how easily it goes in first.

i checked out the GBOX mounts on VW heritage, there is quite a differnece in price between the genuine VW part £135.00 and the Meyle one at £35.00 is this justified or am i just paying for the VW badge?

http://www.vwheritage.com/vw_parts_Type ... ID_353.htm

also will my existing rear linkage rod be suitable or do need a new one?

PS glad you all like my photography :D
