Losing power when I accelerate?

Post by Silky »

On a long journey back from Hampshire the van was running smoothly until a couple of hours into the journey. At around 60-65 on the motorway when I put my foot on the accelerator, the van actually pulled back - but ran smooth again when I took my foot off? The acceleration seemed under powered and when I pulled up at a roundabout, it cut out when I took my foot off the pedal. It got me home and has started fine since although I haven't driven it.

Any ideas?

I had similar symptoms when one of my plug leads decided to break down a few months back.

If this proves to be the case then try taking off the 'tin' plug cap shields (you might needs some nice sharp side cutting pliers or tin snips) now test drive.

Thanks. I wasn't sure if it was something to do with the fuel / fuel pump, hopefully it's something more simple...

Restricted fuel delivery at full throttle opening can cause this and can come and go. Check/clean cone filter in carb and change fuel filter at front.

Thanks. Van seems to be running ok again at the moment, so it definitely comes and goes. It's in for its MOT and a full service tomorrow so I'll get these suggestions checked out.

Interesting, I have just encountered exactly the same problem, was much worse when tried to go up hill and engine was pinking, was fine if I backed off the throttle. It is fine for about an hour or so then this happens. I thought it might be the chokes but surely they would have cut out well before. Any ideas anyone, suppose could be a ht lead.

Vacuum advance unit leaking? Would that cause said symptoms?
