Engine overhaul
After last weeks efforts on removing engine have now commenced strip down.
All ancilleries removed with out any major problem although will be replacing exhaust maniflod studs.
Removed rocker covers and cams then heads taken off. As expected liners stuck to head so these put to one side soaked in plus gas.
Removed push rods and tubes.
Left tappets in position and blocked off openings with rags. Does anyone know if these will retain the oil with the engine being rotated on engine stand? Or will I have to remove and bleed during rebuild.
On inspection of pistons right hand front had a broken oil control ring? About 50mm missing.
Made up device with treaded rod to remove gudgeon pins. Bit worried to start as still very tight and only got slight movement? Went and had a cup of tea and thought about it and modified the pulling device. Pin then came out slowly. Now have both front pistons off but now need some 90 degree circlip pliers to get at back pistons and some longer treaded rod to pull pins.
Did what the book said and covered up the block with rags when removing circlips. On second piston circlip flew of inside block somewhere? Confident it was in among the rags and would pick up later. When turning the engine to raise the piston it fell into the sump? Once piston was of managed to get it with the my telescopic magnet.
Turned the engine over on the stand and the broken ring fell out as well. Still have a silver 20mm of this missing? will keep fingers crossed it turns up.
Will know further when inspect all parts but expect now to include new set of piston rings along with gaskets. Liners look okay at moment.
Waiting for my daughter to come in then will post some photos later.

Re: Engine overhaul
Right hand head.
Left hand head
Right cylinder head with liners
Left hand cylinder head with liners
Internal faces of liners look okay. Block head gaskets in poor condition.
Do have a bit of burning between cylinders on left hand bank/block and lower liner gasket was in poor condition.
Need to decoke heads to check condition.
No evidence yet of gasket failure from the overheating.

Re: Engine overhaul
Parts staring to build up for cleaning.
Keep going into garage to soak heads with plus gas prior to attempt to remove liners tomorrow.
Head studs have light rust but no serious corrosion.
Also surprised at the roughness of internal engine casting surfaces.

Re: Engine overhaul
Today have taken off last two pistons without any problem. Also found missing piece of oil ring from number 4 piston.
Have found that the openings between inner block exiting into the sump have razor sharp edges with even a bit of swarf? These are in an area with no wear face so not sure if this is just poor machine finish at factory. Any one else come across this?
Sharp enough to cut trough surgical glove and snag rag when cleaning inside sump.
Have now also managed to get one of the liners of the head. The other three are still solid so have left to soak.
The liner that came away was the left hand rear. This is the one I was hoping to find evidence of blown head gasket.
Photo of head shows what I consider to be the leak path at top centre right.
Photo of liner shows corresponding leak path at bottom centre.
The reason for the strip down was hopfully to find a blown gasket on this cylinder which was resulting in pressurisation of cooling system.
Can anyone give me a second opinion?

Re: Engine overhaul
Now have all liners removed from head.
Janet was out tonight so had heads in oven one at a time at 150 degrees for 20 minutes. Then managed to break seals on last three liners as heads cooled down.
Now ready to clean and inspect parts.
Checked over flywheel and clutch plate. Discolouration on both so will fit new three piece clutch & flywheel.
Parts laid out ready for overhaul cleaning.
Have shopping list ready to order parts so scope is.
Piston rings, full gasket set, 3 piece clutch, flywheel, rocker covers, oil pump & hoses.
Oops wifes just got in.
Whats that smell? Have you had something in the oven? It smells like burnt oil?
Goodnight

Re: Engine overhaul
Hello,
The fly wheel will clean and polish.
There is probably an 'O' ring type seal inside.
Is there another way to access your photos,? as the link sends me into layers of spam advertising and gambling on line

Re: Engine overhaul
Jeff, you're a brave man. Doing the engine is bad enough, but putting parts in the oven...!
Keep posting the pictures, all good stuff so far.
Cheers,

Re: Engine overhaul
Cylinder heads stripped down.
Both have the hairline cracks between valve seats.
RH Head
LH Head
Will be reusing flywheel as no new items available at moment. Have also added gearbox oil seal & oilite bush for starter to shopping list.
Looking to resolve problem with photos as spam popping up from Imageshack site. Waiting for some help to resolve.

Great thread, i'll be following this one, i'm at a similar stage rebuilding my JX.
Awaiting stuff coming back from the machine shop.
Good luck with it all.

Rob
What machining works are you having done?
May look at getting my heads skimmed as finding it diffcult to clean area for new liner gaskets?

Re: Engine overhaul
Decided on getting the heads skimmed.
Heads before skimming.
After dropping heads off was having second thoughts after reading wiki files? Any way let them proceed.
Have collected heads from machine shop today after skimming. Guy told me the left hand head has been skimmed before? This must have been a while ago consdering the carbon build up and further corrosion to head face.
On reflection look at the first photo left hand head and the protrusion at the bottom right. Now compare this to the protrusion on right hand head at top left? You can see that the left hand head protrusion has had a skim.
Heads after skim today.
Now worried that may have valve/piston clash? Machinists said he removed 5 thou.
Will start build up of engine and keep fingers crossed.
