I know little about petrol engines but I would suggest refitting the old ones and see how it goes then repalce 1 at a time in case you have a duff one?

Check all the HT leads are properly pushed home and that there connected to the right plug. It's easy to to get the leads mixed up if you don't change one plug at a time.

i thought plugs are pre set ? they are the correct plugs for the engine and matched from the book at the suppliers. engine has plenty of power when driving but at idle gets slower until it cuts out .

Hi,
Looking in the Haynes it gives an electrode gap of 0.7 to 0.9mm.
On the side of the spark plug box it says 0.8mm.
I thought this meant they were preset too?

When you pulled off the spark plug caps did you yank the leads themselves? this can break the leads internally (carbon inpregnated fibre core).

Could be just a coincidence I suppose but look for something that you have possibly disturbed....vacuum pipe perhaps.

At the end of the plug that the lead fits onto, did you remove (i.e. unscrew) the little cap before fitting the plugs? Suppressor cap I think it's called. Not needed.

Not a suppressor cap....just a different type of terminal fitment ...leaving on or removing is dependant upon the plug cap type fitted. :ok

guys i`ve done everything correctly .in my younger days i could easily strip and rebuild an escort cross flow engine or a ford pinto and worked as a mechanic for a while . i have no experience with vw engines or electrics though .i`ve never had this prob with any other vehicle including my motorbikes, always just change the plugs and the job is done. any input is welcome though :ok

Hello,

What ignition do you have, how many tubes coming out of distributor canister. :?:

Photos would help.

If it runs ok, ie on all 4 under power, then IMHO, you need to be looking elsewhere...

If it is the Hall ignition set up the little terminals on the dizzycan be very temperamental

"" "" "" is the ignition idler box connected, or shunted out. :?:

At what speed did it tick over before :?:

Cordialement,

:ok

PS x flows were great, specially the aluminium inlet valves :rofl :rofl

Ah right, thanks for the info. Only mentioned it because it has caused me problems in the past until I saw it mentioned on here somewhere, a good while ago.
