Just spoken to him.
Seems an ally tool just won't last, especially with glass impregnated plastic, very abrasive.
I've printed this page out and showed him a drawing, doesn't seem to think it would be a problem, but I think he had concerns over the material, do you not think ABS or similar would be better?
From memory there is a textured finish everywhere on the outside except the VW roundel? can anyone double check that?
He has a spark eroder thingy so it's no problem to produce a spark finish.

Simon Ive already spoke to Duncan, gave him enough information to quote from including materials and finishes, I will send the finished CAD once I decide who is offering the best price on tooling. I have contacted two other supplier I know so I should get a good idea of price for tooling, and moulding then from this I can work out the price per set.

Just to clarify, are we talking about making caps to suit mefros OR 16 inch syncro wheels ?
because as they are different, so 2 sizes would have to be moulded. They sound like they may be costly & may easily be lost (or nicked) in a mud filled wallow hole
Most of us are probably running mefro rims for offroad use and leaving aside appearance etc. I would think that keeping the crud & muck off all the wheelnuts as well as the hubnuts would be more desirable.
Therfore why not make clips, spuds of brackets which allow use of the original VW hubcaps on mefro or indeed any steel wheel, we know do a very decent job of protecting the aforementioned nuts.
Then a chap could have shiney for best and a yellow set for offroad :ok

Brand new original VW chrome ones 25 quid each, cheap ones 10 quid each & 5 quid each for tatty ones-lick of a rattle can

I feel sure that a simple drill a hole & pop rivet solution would be both cost effective & give a decent appearance
so come on you engineering chaps think outside the hub-nut!

Ps I have 4 of the original unmolested vw 16 plastic caps if a virgin one is required for moulding or copying
PPs if you are copying them get them moulded in yellow - it is the new black - just ask jed

You could drill the wheels to take 3 small nipples for the hubcap to snap onto. Jaguar used this mod to fit chrome hubcaps to alloy wheels on their Daimler DS420 limousines...just a thought.

Does anyone have one to hand?
If so could they take a picture of the part number and any other markings around it?

I can't see any part number stamped in this one.

It is 85mm wide at the wheel, 55 mm tall, with a 50mm VW roundel on a 60mm shoulder.
The walls are 1.5mm. It is ribbed, with a thick rib by base internally.

I'm not surprised they get lost, there's so little to keep them on. If they had a hexagonal pocket inside to grab the hub nut, it would be a useful addition and make them a bit more universal?

Bit of an old thread revival, but did anyone manage anything with this; or does anyone know a good second choice?
