Here are my pictures at long last!

Where the chassis rails have been trimmed, even at the deepest part there is still some of the 'brim' of the top hat section present. The edges of the cut have been seam welded together.

The hinge is bolted to the original 'sump guard' bolts on the suspension sub-frame. The front end uses the spring hook and bolt of the standard wheel carrier. The upper side wall of the tyre just clears the steering shaft.

Gary, nice, thanks for your helpful replies and taking the time to do this.

Can anyone offer any input on rear wheel carrier options as well please? Haven't picked up the phone yet but sent a load of email enquiries out last week and the only person to reply with something to offer so far was the very pleasant and helpful Burl from Burley Motorsports. Theirs looks well made, I'm waiting for a price for shipping from the US a custom made right side one.

I have the rare Tristar optional wheel carrier which is very similar to yours Gary. I'll get some photos tomorrow.

I haven't fitted it yet as I need to install a hinge at to the subframe.

Gary - what kind of hinge is that and is it something you can retrofit?

Paul,
my hinge is a fabricated device made from a length of tube, cut into seven pieces and assembled onto a rod with a washer and split pin at each end. Not a tight bearing fit but rather slacker to allow for corrosion, etc.

Alternate pieces of tube are welded to the rear crossbar of the carrier or to a length of 4mm(?) plate. This plate is bolted into the welded nuts in the suspension frame.

Thanks Gary. Mine has two pieces of tube already on the carrier but I too was worried about corrosion and rusted pins.

I'll bear your design in mind when mounting it.

I like that. Spare is still in the factory location so it can't be adversely affecting the vehicle's C.O.G. or handling.
And you still get the dubious thrill of "mind your fingers!"
