Top fixing of truck style syncro mirrors
I've got some truck style syncro mirrors and yesterday had a look at how to fit them and I appear to be missing a rivnut or self tapping screw for the top fixing. I have 2 rivnuts so these will be for the outer face of the fixing, my question is, will it be OK to use a third rivnut on the narrow edge of the door frame?
See the attached photo to see what I mean:
Any close up photos of the top fixing on genuine syncro mirrors would be appreciated.
Also when I fit the rivnuts I was intending to use a thin coating of epoxy glue on the rivnut barrel to reduce the chance of water ingress and rusting - are there any views on this idea, good or bad?

I also used three rivnuts for the top fixing. However, the third fixing you have highlighted does not sit flat against the return of the frame of the door/quarterlight. I think that there was originally a thick 'rubber' gasket for this mount which filled the gap. (Didn't get that with my used mirrors and not seen them available as individual parts.)

When I did a test fit I initially thought that I had a duff set, but then noticed that there was a wedge shaped gasket that filled the gap. It seems that someone at VW made boo-boo on the frame, or was this a frame originally designed for another vehicle.garyd wrote:I also used three rivnuts for the top fixing. Thanks, I'll go ahead and use 3 rivnuts on each mirror.

They are supplied to us with rivnuts, however I don't use them, they are a pain in the ring.
I went and sourced these instead.

Simon,
are the wedge gaskets available separately from the mirror sets?

Simon, you state 'For T3 Truck mirrors you need 4 per vehicle, 2 per side.', but aren't 3 per side needed?Simon Baxter wrote:They are supplied to us with rivnuts, however I don't use them, they are a pain in the ring.

Also what do you use after drilling the hole to stop corrosion, because paint would be removed by the self tapper?
E D I T:
Sorry, I realise that there are two different screw's, two 5.5x16 & one 5.5x22, so 3 screws per side.

Re: Top fixing of truck style syncro mirrors
Same as what you use if you prefer riv nuts.
Your still drilling a hole into painted sheet metal whatever you decide.
Fit the screw then remove and paint.
Loads of wax, it all depends how obsessed you are.

rivnuts me.
Can choose from a variety of Dinitrol products to seal when rivetting. Pre-spray into cavity if want. Load a good dollop around rivnut before pulling up... wipe off after.
