Avoid the 2.4d Phil, we have it and all requests for acceleration have to put in writing!

rear diff lock on some which makes a massive difference
front diff lock can be built in but is expensive and hard to get done
they can come with electronic diff lock which seems to be a bit pants but better than nothing
the t25 syncro is way stronger built than the t4 and was more setup as a very capable stock 4x4 with many alterations to the 2wd t25, the t4 is the same but they stick the syncro system on it.
the limiting factors are suspension, ground clearance, difflocks, vc when it ages, approach and departure angles, under ride protection, body stiffening, air intake and breather set up, hard and expensive for parts, lack of information in general

the pros are the engines, power,mpg,reliability, and drives like a car on long trips, the freewheeling device to stop wind up , simple and easy to fix, not much loss of mpg over a 2wd, not much weight added overall by the syncro system, designed to accelerate well, go fast, stop fast and travel long distance, still built a lot better than a t5 or more modern vehicle, t4 parts in general are everywhere and cheap and info on them is very easy to find.

my main problem was having a t4 syncro that is actually very capable off road and extremely multipurpose, but being worried about using it because it is in such good condition and hard and expensive to get parts for, and its the daily drive so i cant afford to be with out it. Its so easy to damage something if you are pushing your own and the vehicles limits, i guess a lot comes down to experience.

but i have been very impressed with mine even just for the small things like it handles really good on the road much better than the 2wd and i am very confident in it in bad winter conditions

Pretty good,
the off road capabilities are limited,
and for this reason I would rather have a T25.

My 2.4 is a chugger and happy, I dont miss acceleration.
It does what I need it to, on road, or up to its axles in mud,
a couple of times its failed at what was easy in a T25.

One thing I like, is its economical and fast enough,
and its standard as the day it left the factory.

My missus is a syncro girl, drove T25 all over OZ,
she hardly ever drove our T25 here,
but will jump in the T4 anytime, really likes it.

Front difflock would be great,
its always a front spinning thats stopping the motion.
Think its got a much softer VC and a 60/40 bias in favour of the front.
Having somewhat 4x4 does help, but not enough for the rough.
Perhaps it could be improved.

Several T4 Syncro Westies took full part in the French Syncro meet in normandie last year. Ok so the laning was moderate but even in the harder sections the pretty much stock t4 in our convoy handled all with aplomb. Ground clearance was a slight issue as I recall. Later in the week a couple more joined - one set up much more like the white one that Xriss posted up recently. Very nice campers . I drive a T4 1.9 td every day. Starts , accelerates , drives great for what it is. Meg drives it all the time as well .

I heard nobody mentioning one other really big disadvantage, there is no G-gear! When you're stuck in bog or doing a steep ascent this will have to take place in regular 1st gear. Not ideal and your clutch will suffer!

the doka needs to come off the road for a complete rebuild and i need a replacement for a few months while i do that and the choice is between a t4 syncro or a golf country, the doka is not being replaced !! but i am finding that taking the doka off road and breaking it does make getting to work very challenging so i am looking at getting a third vehicle so that the doka would become a toy and not a tool

Big difference from a t4 to golf..
golf aint gonna haul loads of stuff and a big trailer.. but ought to provide all weather traction and light offroading and prob be sensible to run as a daily...
