Front chassis leg blister

Post by silverbullet »

Looks like Atlantis' 28-odd years are catching up fast... Offside front chassis leg behind the wishbone mount has had the usual blister for a while now (odd for a rhd bus or is it always the battery side?)
While doing a mud-rake out prior to pre-MOT jobs I had a bit if a pick at it and it's now cause for concern, so I need to sort it asap.
Question is: how thick a piece of plate do I need in order to do a one-piece repair, without all the fannying about trying to repair the individual layers? 4mm? 5mm?
I think I can get away without dropping the front subframe, just concerned if there is anything inside the box if I just plunge in with a cutting disc, or is it just the captive nuts for the subframe at the bottom?

It is syncro-specific, 2wd dont have the internal reinforcement for the subframe mounting.
I just remembered that Jake's Westy had similar work a few years back.
Won't get any advice from that quarter then!

Ha ha ha! Its only a bit of flat plate...hopefully tomorrow will be conducive to a bit of front diff removal and angle grindery. Pics when I get in there.

Been reliably told that its 2 x 1.5mm plates for the chassis rails. Weather not on my side so no progress. SORN time again...

I had to do a smiliar repair on my 16", a few pics here:
https://plus.google.com/photos/11337725 ... peuC5rqxGA" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
It is a while since I did the repair but I'm a bit old school and went down the belt and braces route and used 3mm thick.
Have fun :D
