An old friend has been in touch and asked me to collect it from him..
It was on the road and he parked it when MOT ran out as he had other vehicles to use.. never got round to doing anything with it.. only bought it for the registration number.. which he never transferred.....
Don't know anymore than that really..

Golf / Jetta / Passat Syncros are getting thin on the ground. What have you got your eye on?

What do you need to know. I've had a few of them.

Well.. dunno yet.. was just gonna read up on what I could find..

one thing I was wondering is if the final drive can be lowered as it looks like the drive to the back comes off an output of the front diff.. rather than a direct pinion out put like t25's so..
Well.. lets see what its like.. it might be a parts car rather than a runner....
cheers

OK so here are the basics.

The Syncro has a different floorpan to the normal Golf, with a higher boot floor and tunnel to accomodate a prop and the rear subframe/diff setup.

Most come with a carburettored 1.8 engine which isn't a ball of fire. The carbs (Pierburg, like on the vans) can be troublesome and in the Syncro this can be seen with poor starting, rough idle and low mpgs.

Brakes and suspension on the rear differ from normal Golfs with some of the parts originating from the Passat.

Performance wise, You can swap the cam (GTI part is a cheap upgrade), air filter and carb (Weber) and exhaust to get more grunt at a bolt on level. The exhaust downpipe can be problematic as it differs from the normal Golf and GTI where it clears the front box, but you can modify one/get one made easy enough.

The Syncro isn't as fast as the GTI but with the Weber, exhaust and cam it feels as good and you can throw it around with more confidence.

If it's not your bag, let me know. I might be interested depending on price and condition.
