kinda like this....http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=568346" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; Apart from instead of flipping the box, he makes the engine run backwards...eltee wrote:I would love to v6 my syncro with a flipped a4 quattro gearbox and rig up the a4 rear diff to the front, mmmmm
Time is a drug. Too much of it kills you
Re: v6 tdi
would that be the bdh ake bau?...i think the quattro ones were 180 bhp .... not sure but were the AKE mechanical pump...perhaps you might know pete...better still might you have a surplus of nos kicking about that rather large workshop of yours

i have been reading the 1.8t backwards, but my thought was the gearing with the a4q stuff, 6 speed and relaxed cruising would be nice.

Re: v6 tdi
I really ought to take a look in the Quattro gearbox in the shed.. see if the diff can be swapped..
Re: v6 tdi
the engines are both AKN 150hp manual transmission, one I fitted 4 brand new cams into a couple of years ago the other has good cams.

Re: v6 tdi
There was a syncro velle at Busfest on Belgian (?) plates with one of these. Looked snug! I can see the appeal of a de-tuned version, so you get the smoothness without the jack-hammer 4-cylinder torque pulses wrecking the transmission.

these guys do a whole bunch of adaptor plates for starters http://www.ds-tuning.com/adapter.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Re: v6 tdi
Ian, there was a Dutch guy named Jaap with a V6 TDI'd Syncro, I chatted with him about it and took some pics.
I was quite impressed and for a few days was definitely having thoughts.. It seems to suit the T3 quite well in terms of physical fit, and available output, and has some quite appealing characteristics. However, when I started looking into it, the camshaft issues became a concern, and also the cost and relative (to 1.9) scarcity of some key components such as injectors, turbo and pump. I concluded a 1.9 PD would be a cheaper way forward. Shame really as the cool-factor of the V6 is way up there !
There are some photo's of Jaap's conversion on his webspace: http://syncrobus.nl/het-begin/fotos.
One thing he did I wasn't so impressed with was a hybrid ( 240mm/24 tooth 'small' spline) friction plate he made, it seems to do the job, but I think a better approach would be to have a 23-tooth custom input shaft made and use stock clutch parts. PS. E D I T I *think* its 240mm, definitely DMF anyway, hence the need for adaption onto the T3 trans.
E D I T 2: I just watched that video, bloody hell they sound good don't they ! If I had a good v6 donor engine sat about plus a complete spare for parts, I'd be having thoughts again...

Re: v6 tdi
Allroads had either 163 or 180 bhp @ 4200 iirc. Definitely a multi-pin plug on the fuel pump/distributor, had to replace some cracked fuel lines this Spring, bit fiddly but not an awful job. Most servicing is a bit of an epic though, cambelt = bumper off and go in the front on quattros Nice soft rev limit as they reach the govenor though, I had the Allroad with an AKE (180) and would pull max revs in 6th to rech the book top speed of 127, it simply stopped accelerating. Not bad for a 2000kg car.xriss wrote:would that be the bdh ake bau?...i think the quattro ones were 180 bhp .... not sure but were the AKE mechanical pump...perhaps you might know pete...better still might you have a surplus of nos kicking about that rather large workshop of yours

Re: v6 tdi
My van is now sat engine less.
I definately want to go tdi and am thinking either PDF 130 or 2.5 tdi. Lots of people are pushing me to PDF, but I want 2.5tdi.
I have already done a home spun flipped gearbox (agg with 1.8 20v 5 speed gearbox) which was very good, but engine is sold and gearbox I will look to sell after the conversion is complete.
To get the gearbox level with OK drive shaft angles, I had to drop the engine by 60mm, which again suits the v6 setup or maybe a PDF at near upright.
The torque curve looks perfect on the 2.5 to me and it is low so no screaming engines.
The main concern has been MPG, but I really casnt see it being that bad.
The thing I found with the flipped 5 speed was that the engine lacked the torque at hills so I found myself dropping through the gears and dropping my MPG.
I think the gearing on the standard car based tdi may be too high for the camper (I have a high top) due to the weight and amount of air it is pushing so may have to use a different gearbox - I have already harvested a 6 speed GVD from a 2.0 t a4 with 0.658 6th gear and 3.850 final drive which may be the ticket.
Does anyone have or can measure the overall height of the engine and the distance from the centre of the flywheel output to the top of the engine please?

Re: v6 tdi
you might get some info off the bernd jeager website, as he fits these 2.5's. I remember reading somewhere that the height is similar to a AAZ @ 50 degrees as the degree of the V on the 2.5 is 50deg. Apparently meant to fit under a standard engine lid..
