Is it a bird - no its a bloody squeek ??

Thought I had rear CV issues as I had a drive-line squeak from the rear of the van over the last week, so my friendly garage replaced them for me yesterday. But still got the noise there today, will have a look in the morning if its dry but puzzled what I could be looking for. Its a sort of high pitched squeek, like a bird cheeping. Maybe it is a bird !!! Its intermittent but usually there when slowing down and seems to go with speed of the wheels rolling. The rear wheels are not getting hot after a long run. Prop uj maybe ?

thanks Lloydy, I'm on petrol. was going to look at the exhaust tomorrow for anything rubbing, but the noise sounds more like when something rotating, noise slows right down when the van slows.

ha ha, that would be hilarious if it was that, I'll check but the noise stops when the van is not moving, but you never know.

Rotten, swollen, crusty brake back plate catching the drum.
Hub nut not tightened properly.

I had a pebble lodged between the back plate and the drum once. That made a noise like you describe (road speed related, obviously)

Ah they sound likely, thanks all, its the first time I tried to jack both rear wheels, looks like I need some bigger axle stands, local shop has all sorts, whats a good height. My cast 2 ton jacks only go 18 inches on full reach. Is the cross-member in front of the rear wheels the best place to place axle stands get both wheels airborne so I can spin them.

cheers Aidan, but too late already bought some far more expensive and probably inferior ones, but hey ho, onwards and upwards - literally.

Into the driver side which is where I though the noise was a little louder. but haven't really found anything yet, apart from a heap of brake dust.Haven't been able to get the birdie noise going by hand spinning. Brake back plate looks good, wheel bearings feel ok, although its hard to tell by spinning em with he friction through the gear and other wheel. Next to no rock top and bottom of the wheel. Heading off to the wonderful wiki for a read.

Cheers Simon, yes could be, didn't take shoes off yet but given it all a good wire brush, move shoes about, dust out with air line and liberal clean with brake cleaner. I'll give it a road test after a cuppa. Full of brake fluid under all the rear brake cylinder rubber covers. So seals will have to be done next time.

Driver side wheel has a little rock top and bottom but not sideways, nipped up the wheel bearing nut one split pin hole on the castle but didn't seem to make any difference.

Must say its great having all this help from the forum and wiki.
