I once dropped a car off when I was travelling with two student mates. It was the end of our trip and we were proper skint - we each had exactly $19 left, which was the fare from Virginia beach to JFK via greyhound. We were kicking a ball around a car park wondering how we were going to feed ourselves with no money and three days to kill, when we got chatting to a guy about football, our trip etc etc. anyway , he told us to wait there and disappeared into a block of flats on the beach. 5 mins later he reappeared and gave us each a $100 bill. Said he was on his annual holiday and was off to have a gamble in adlantic city . he Wished us luck and wandered off up the beach. We had a blast , couldn't believe our luck. Couldn't imagine that happening anywhere else .

Beautiful, empty, country. Heard about these sort of things but never done it.
Brother did a 4x4 camper rental return in Oz, But didn't really enjoy it... 6days 5 nights from Darwin to Perth, but due to the time restrictions, felt he was missing the real experience of being in the Australian outback.
Some Q's if you don't mind......
Do you get to pick/decline the type of vehicle? How much did the trip cost you? Do they arrange/pay the insurance? Cost of flights to NY out of LA? Accomadation costs? Fuel? Have you worked it all out?

Here's how it goes
1) go on website see what trips/vehicles available
2) email them telling them which one you want give deposit by credit card to hold vehicle
3) book flights and first night hotel
4) fly in pick vehicle up and take each day as it comes
Cost wise this time flight Manchester to New York San Francisco to Manchester 520
Hotels and motels you take your pick cheap and nasty nice and dearer
Insurance is their company's so no worries
If car breaksdown you are a bit on your own though if the owner won't pay you leave it and make your own way
Easier if there's two of you doing it
You pay for fuel and accommodation
