front drive shaft spacers

Post by axeman »

i found out that these were missing yesterday when i was removing the diff on sally's van. i replaced the vc and the the 2 outer cv joints and cleaned, repacked and rebooted the 2 inner joints, i have reinstalled the diff as i had to get the van back on the road (drive it home) but with out the spacers. dose any one know what the effect is of running the van with out the spacers?

also if any one has a spaire pair that they are willing to part with let me know.

thanks neil

What does happen if they are missing ? IIRC mine did not have any when I dropped the drive shafts off to change the outers.

I would say the joint wont be perfectly located centrally and may be compromised in the torque transfer department...that's my guess...based on nothing!

without them I figure the length of stroke is reduced across the whole shaft (ie both cv's range of lateral motion) by the 5mm and the inner cv joint runs closer to it's angular limit, also there may be some interference with the extra thread length on the correct 50mm bolts sticking out of the back of the flanges and say damaging the plastic adjusting ring cover if it has become distorted over time (and a lot have) - if you fit them to a van where they were missing check the bolts are 50mm rather than the rears 48mm
genuine bolts still available from vw I think and brickies

We have them, probably festering in a corner somewhere, no idea where they went.
I'll go look now.
