Exhaust parts

Post by jswagger »

Hi,

I'm trying to fix the exhaust on my 1988 1.9 DG Caravelle for the MOT and am having a bit of "fun".

I tracked the initial hole down to a large hole in the cast elbow and also the join between this and the pipe nearest the gearbox that runs from the exhaust manifold to the elbow (front pipe in the haynes manual?) Examining the front pipe I now see that whilst the pipe itself is ok the joins (x3) for the hot air pickup point for the air filter are completely loose.

As JK do not appear to do this part does anyone know anyone that does or is simply a case of putting the joints back together? The air filter pick up joints are not bolt together so how are they fixed together?

Should I just bite the bullet and get a complete new exhaust?

Thanks for your help

isn't number 5 a heat exchanger for an air cooled van?

if you can get your exhaust off without a nightmare, I would replace the whole kit an cabuddle, how I would love to be able to undo my exhaust pipe from the engine :D

btw, fairwynds how is the rebuilt DG running?

I think that's just for the cold start system

and it's the wrong system anyway as jswagger mentions the cast elbow which is a newer system

GSF sell these too have you tried them?

Thanks for all the replies.

fairwynds: thanks for the offer but that doesn't look like my system

I had a look on the GSF website but they don't have pictures so couldn't tell. Looks like I'll have to pop in and have a look.

Thanks again
