Battery led goes dim every now and then

even when the battery is fully charged, and the terminals are clean

Any prime suspects?

You mean glows dimly when the engine is running?

Try cleaning the terminals on the back of the alternator... If that doesn't help it may need new brushes.

As Dan says.
If you remove the regulator from the alternator ( two screws) there are a pair of brushes 10mm new 5mm minimum.
