gearbox fitting question?
Well i got the gearbox out and bought another to put in and am at the stage of all going swimmingly but i cannot seem to locate the box back into place on the engine. As far as i can see the gearbox shaft should just slot into the clutch on the engine..but whatever i do it doesnt want to go! The angles all seem ok and i have loosely located the bolts in their slots to check that it all lines up but there is about 25mm left to go but it dont wana! Anyone got any tips or help regarding this please...do i have to force it or wiggle the box excessivley or do something else like lower the engine to get the angle?....its a T25 5 speed 1600TD 1989 California...
Cheers

clutch
have you removed the clutch?
when you refitted it was it aligned properly?
check the center hole is center to the flywheel
measure the input shaft on both gear boxes
is the clutch arm free on the new box?
is the internal bell housing the same on both boxes?

thanks, the jacks under both items seems to be the best option..just didnt think it would be such a delicate thing to put together...ive had new clutch fitted and all were good with other gearbox so all of that should b ok...
i will measure all bits but it all looks the same.....interesting about the shaft lengths...never suspected that one...will check all tomorrow.
Dont want to force anything so all this info really much appreciated. thanks.

Also, what is the little plastic scew threaded thing on the timing inspection hole for??....

box clever
Sometimes the splines on the clutch and input shafts are just out of line and a little tweak on the the crank is all that is needed for it to slot home easily - it's happened to me several times.

No havent got a clutch alighning tool but the clutch was fine before and is brand new so im assuming all of that is ok!
Wiggling the gearbox in seems to be what i have to do whilst me mate possibly turning the input shafts a bit and pushing it into place looks like the proceadure....
...It seems tho that i have to turn the engine at a bit of an angle to all this cos otherwise i wont get the gearbox lined up properly...with the engine straight and not tilted when i position the gearbox into place the front end knocks on the chassis which prevents it from going up anymore...but to tilt the engine i have to take exhaust backbox off!
..thanks for all the tips. very helpful.

you have the engine at too much of an angle, by the sounds of it, try a bit more upness on the engine jack, and lift the gearbox up too........
they can be buggers, and others slip in within seconds.....
i have always found the trick is to keep things a level as possible

yeah ok, well it went in eventually! The main thing was to make sure it was all aligned and wiv lots of wiggling, put in gear and turn the input shafts until it clicks/slides into place....i also tilted the engine a bit to help wiv the wiggling but hard word and time consuming never the less, and such a relief to get the blighter in there i can tell ya! Now on to the power steering leak and adjusting the gear lever....
thanks for all advice.
