Would also like to know how to clean the seams before treating.

I don't want to seal/paint over hidden rust :(

cleaning off rust

Post by VWlewis »

I have used a "dremel" type tool with a range of bits - this requires patience and a steady hand. The alternative is to blast the seam with sand but this is messy and will also remove good paint adjacent to the seam.

Have a read here to for more ideas -

Thanks all. Ive been using the Dremmel technique, and today also found (in Wilcos) a 'grout remover' tool, which looks like a section of saw blade in a handle, good for scraping out most of the sealant.

it pointless doing the outside of the seam unless you remove interior panels & do the back as well--yool never get all the rust out-it will be between the spot welds--

Rusty seams

Post by dutch »

So many with seam issues , my experience has been a baptism of fire , Boris my 24 year old westy came into the warehouse for some light titalation , 2 years ago ! After removing one bit then another to expose the true extent of rot i should have just cut him up & sold what i could & made a we fortune . A lot of the seams appeare to be only lightly corroded on the outside but after removing the inner paneling ( complete interior ) i have found horible tin worm , i have so far replaced front scuttle OSR inner & outer 1/4 panel , wheel arch , rear lower 1/4 panel NRS outer 1/4 pannel wheel arch & lower 1/4 panel . I decided to gouge out any remaining seam sealer around the factory panel joints wire bush & weld up all the external seams & deseam , i will then lather the inner pannels with waxoil . Good luck to you
