Halfwits Combination Relay (split charger)
Hello
I have bought a leisure battery 110Ah (£60 from Go Outdoors) and I have bought one of these Halfords(£16.99) but the wiring diagram does not have an additional battery. Its purpose is a combination relay for split charging aux battery & fridge supply (says on the back of relay) and there are 5 wires
1 - purple
2 - red
3 - light green (with inline fuse rated 15A)
4 - black
5 - dark green.
My leisure battery is in a special made box behind drivers seat (right next to starter battery), I think this is the best place for it. On searching Wiki/www I find that normal relays have 4 connections labelled 85,86,87,30. Mine has the above 5 connections/wires. Does anyone know how to wire these up as the diagram provided is crap. (there isnt a blue wire etc!)
Advice gratefully received. Im sure it isnt very difficult its just the wires here are all labelled differently. The Halfords part is
Long link
Thanks for reading

Hello. Yes I have instructions & diagram but as I said there is no aux battery so not obvious to me. I can pm you the scanned image or post on here but that isnt obvious to me either. (Im not stupid but when I preview the post on here (BB) it just shows the location of file on my hard drive. Am I making sense? Its not my day as the cats been sick on my new floor. Advice on halfords relay please, and how do I post a jpeg?

Go to www.tinypic.com and follow the instructions there for uploading a picture.
When the picture is uploaded copy the contents of the URL box on the webpage (there is more than one box but URL is what you want).
Come back here and make a new post. Press the Img button, paste the URL you copied and then press the Img button again.
Then we can all see the diagram and hopefully figure out what the Halfords thing does.

pretend your aux battery is a caravan, that should sort it.......
if you gave us a clue what the instructions said we might be able to help.......... which is more than halfwits could.......

I hope this helps. I didnt realise you HAD to upload onto external server. Why cant we just attach an image anyway is that standard practice for bulletin boards. Halfords are annoying arent they, I just realised I could have just went to Maplins for relay now.

ok, from your diagram, the red and green going to the supp socket (12s) are for the fridge (green) and aux battery (red).
the purple goes to the alternator signal wire ( which is blue thin wire on t25 at back of alternator) and the light green ( with fuse) goes to your main battery pos connection., black to vehicle chassis earth.

Thanks GuysOne more question though. I have got a 240v supplied CTEK Multi XS 3600 battery charger (12V, 3.6A, 0-120Ah). Could I hard wire to my wiring on van and just plug in at campsite? I would wire it in as follows (courtesy of Keith & Sylvia's) - My charger (+ve) would take the place of Zig Unit labelled X here, and (-ve) to earth. If necesary I wouldn NOT use 12v in van unless charger was disconnected but advice on this, and how my relay is wired in, ie applying this diagram greatly appreciated. Thanks in anticipation

yeah, that will work, but if it was me i would include a relay, so that the battery charger wasnt connected to the battery unless it was powered u from the mains.....
simple 4 pin relay, wired in such a way that the +12vdc from the charger was also the signal to the relay coil or justuse a manual switch to disconnect the charger when the 240 wasnt being used, as a zig unit does.

Nice one Mocki. I think I will fit a switch between charger and aux battery as you suggest. Does this mean that the 5 connections for my Halfords relay are as follows
1 (purple) goes to alternator charging line, which is blue thin wire on t25 at back of alternator.
2 (red) goes to +ve on Aux battery
3 (light green) goes to starter battery +ve
4 (black) goes to -ve earth
5 (green) goes to fridge
What would happen if I used 12v in van whilst charging from 240v. Would it damage the charger or blow fuses? This would benefit from longer battery life as I would be 'topping up' whilst using 12v?

as long as the battery is between the charger and the appliance it will be ok, it will act as a regulator.
if you intend using that realy from halfwits for you fridge as well, insert a switch in the fridge wire, 20amp min, or your fridge will be cooling all the time the engine is running and your alternator wont like that......
infact, i would insert a switch (10amp) in the purple wire to switch the whole thing off for short journeys in the winter to give you alternator a chance of keeping up with the extra load incurred in winter, wipers, heater lights ect.....

sounds like good advce to me. The wiring configuration - is that correct Mocki? ie Halfwits relay wiring connections. I wont be using the fridge in the near future but maybe one day. I think the switch on purple wire is a great idea, also longer life for relay probably as its not being switched every journey. Is it best to have this relay in engine compartment or in with the leisure battery box, with charger, and aux fusebox?
