Replacing DF engine with DG

Post by scooterdoc »

I'm just about to get a new bus, but it has DF engine, my old one has DG

Is it easy to replace it with the DG? or any recommendations for upping the power of the DF?

I upgraded from DF (60bhp) to DG (78bhp) when my DF died.
The improvement is immense, but I suspect the DF was always a bit tired.
Swap is easy, use carb and manifold from DG rest is interchangeable.

It depends on which cooling system and exhaust you have as well - there is much more difference between early and late than between DF and DG and when I was considering using a DF as a quick replacement for a DG I decided not to bother as just about every hose and wire in the two vans I had was different. One thing that did help the DF (in fairly good nick so far as I could tell) was fitting a DG carb and inlet manifold, this meant changing the throttle cable and adding the hoses to heat the choke. Note that this is not the only difference between DF and DG - the DF had smaller valves for a start.
Why does the not quite finished job before last always conspire with the not quite started job after next to make what you should be doing now harder?

DF and DG will fit with either the early or the late cooling system, you just need to swap the plumbing bits between the blocks, if you are lucky the two lumps you are swapping will have been attached to the same cooling set up in which case you can swap them pipes and all. iirc the cooling system changed around 1985. The only difference is that choke on the Pierberg carb on the DG is plumbed into the cooling system, but not a big deal to sort out.

I think either exhaust set up will fit around either plumbing system but do not know for sure, I'm told later exhaust set up gives more bhp but I guess you will be swapping lump and exhaust together for an easy life....

all the 4cylinder WBX engines are interchangeable, the watery bits swap round, as do the zorsts, the heads are not sided, so changing between early and late only means the water goes the other way round, bit like aussie plug holes and ours !!

yep, 2.1 will fit, but you will need a DG carb is you are not going to use the FI

Isn't there a longevity issue when using 2.1 with carb rather than FI? That's what I wanted to do originally
