Fitted a new 4-pin power connector for number plate lights.

Nice selection of battle scars, which are already going a nice rusty brown to match the rest

Getting there mate - like that the number plates are all original as well.

Any welding required or is she all good?

Well spotted, yeah number plates match the original dealer in North London (01 for London).

I think a petrol commercial had 22% import tax where as a diesel had 5%, hence why it took me 2 years to find one.

All good on the welding front Image

Horn unit was faulty so nicked this exact replacement of my mates ‘87 Polo.
Indicators came back to life by magic once I pulled the steering wheel off and steering column cover and cleaned the dust/dirt away.

Tailgate has been sprayed a darker blue at some point, probably to fit a darker blue van, so I tried some thinners on it and the dark blue came off, so underneath is the correct LH5G blue for this, so that’ll match soon.

The under belly …

https://youtu.be/4rpMwuolv34

Rear brake lines are shot.

Yes, its a bit knarly under here, but I’ll wire brush it and it'll come up ok.

I don’t want to then cover it in black underseal as the blue paint is still there in some places, so it'll get some clear POR-15

To Do List:
Brake Service
Clutch Ferrule
Headlamp alignment
NSR wheel bearing (2006)
Gear Linkage

Oil pump gasket weeping a bit, so I'll get to that on the next oil change - no other oil leaks - which is good.
Old VW's are supposed to leak a bit, aye?! ;)

Mint!  :D

Wheel bearings, slave cylinders & shoes replaced. No human has seen the inside these drums for at least 15 years.

Bent the crow bar trying to get the hub nut off!

Set up the gear linkage 23mm as best I could, gear selection is good on the 5 speed and reverse is an adventure to the left / down / left a bit more / down / forward / wiggle and into reverse; so that’s normal for our vans :)

MOT today - everything I've done it passed on & everything I failed to check it failed on! lol

Repair immediately (major defects):
  1. Exhaust emissions carbon monoxide content excessive (8.2.1.2 (b))
  2. Central Front Seat belt missing (7.1.2 (a))
  3. Offside Front Seat belt buckle missing (7.1.2 (d))
  4. Main beam tell-tale missing (4.9.1 (a) (ii))
  5. Offside Position lamp not working (4.2.1 (a) (ii))
  6. Nearside Headlamp aim projected beam image is obviously incorrect (4.1.2 (c))
Repair as soon as possible (minor defects):
  • Indicator tell-tale inoperative (4.9.1 (a) (i))
To Do:
  1. I think it was still on choke, hence the emissions failure - MOT station 100 yards away from workshop. Never had any issues prior, with this engine/carb. Maybe I'll tweak the air/fuel mix after it’s off choke & give it an oil change too.
  2. Lap belt for middle seat required
  3. Drivers seat belt buckle - you'd think I'd notice that was missing, wouldn't you?!
  4. Blue & Green LEDs tell-tale gone walkabout in the binnacle
  5. OSF headlamp - needs a side light bulb
  6. NSF beam - I replaced this with a left hand drive headlamp in error

So, glass half full and all that, I don't think that's to bad for a vehicle that has been off the road for 15 years. All easily fixable.

Re-test w/b 16th Aug

MOT failure list doesn’t look bad at all, I’d be well happy with that & like you said, all easily fixable (although that hub nut looked a PITA)!

Not long now before you’ve got that pass paperwork in hand!

Yeah, agreed. Nothing too difficult. A pleasant surprise. In fact only took a couple of hours to sort those items on Saturday. Just waiting for a couple of LEDs in the post for the binnacle and it can go back for the retest.
