unsafe to drive ...HELP

Post by libraryboy »

Was travelling down the a27 at about 65 in my 1.9petrol when there was a loud bang/thump under the cab.though it might be worth investigating so pulled over and crawled under.found no faults.drop link, anti roll,hubs..every thing good so put it down to road debris and set off again.had two more bang/thumps uder cab floor at completely random speeds and intervals over the next 5 miles so same again,,under I went with my torch and had a good pull/yank about but still nothin. decided to call for second opinion from aa bloke who turned up and jacked front off floor.between us we pulled and levered the complete front end but apart from some small play in front bearings nothing was found..took him for drive about to see if he could ident the noise but sod's law nothing happened so we parted company and of i trotted at slow speeds..7 miles down the road and BANG same again but this time it pulled on the steering wheel sharply towards the kerb.followed by the sound of my bearings packing up on the f/n/side .back under and still nothing so recovery truck for the first time 60 miles home..
Has anyone had similar symptoms? possible calipers or speedo drive probs?

Brake calipers are tight arnt they? No snapped bolts?
Difficult to say without being there, but its strange that everything is tight.

The only time I experienced what you describe was when driving a double desker bus and the problem turned out to be a wheel bearing collapse.

Yup. Sounds like a wheel bearing collapse to me too. My van did a similar thing except the bang was followed by a horrible grinding noise at irregular intervals. Get some new bearings on and she'll be reet. ;-)

Are you sure the stabilizer rod (8) is not pushing through the mounting discs (4)?
I've had it on mine, loud bangs and grinding noises...

Maybe it's the radius rod snapped where the threaded portion goes through the chassis.
