Hannover, west Germany

you can find out more here

To get an official VW Birth Certificate, VW requires a payment of 35 Euro by credit card (VISA/Mastercard only), check, or cash along with your full name, VIN (chassis) number.

Personal checks can be made out to "Stiftung AutoMuseum Volkswagen"

You can mail credit card details or a check to:
Stiftung AutoMuseum Volkswagen
Brieffach 1003
Frau Neefe
Dieselstrasse 35
D-38436 Wolfsburg Germany

To fax your request with credit card info, use international phone #:
011 49 5361 52010

To transfer the money to their bank account:
Volksbank Wolfsburg
Bank number: 269 910 66
Account number: 811 840 000
Care of: Stiftung AutoMuseum Volkswagen
Keyword: "Urkunde"

The easiest way may be to pay by credit card online:
On the VW Museum Website, you can click on Urkundengenerator (Certificate Generator) and use your credit card online
Click on English at the top of the site to see the form in English or click here:
http://automuseum.volkswagen.de/index.php?id=12&L=1" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

If you have any trouble with the German version, see these English translated instructions from a Samba member:
http://cabby-info.com/certificate.htm" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

You will get an A4 (approx. 8.5"x11") letter that has:
Build date
Delivery date
Delivery Destination
Original colors and upholstery
Optional extras (M-codes)

Note: The museum no longer provides the engine number on the certificate but if you provide your engine number in your request, they will verify if it is the original engine.

Can't you get some info from the DMV? Here in Norway you can go to them with your licence plate number and they they will print you a list of all former owners and where they lived at the time. Then just look them up in the phone book and give them a call. No idea if that works in the UK thought. my ex doka syncro came with no history, but after a visit there i found out I'll was the 9th owner, the first two (86-98) were two different sections of the same power company, then a few other people, then it was unregistered for half a year in 05 (re-registered on the same guy afterword) and then a few more owners (all still in the same region where it was originally sold). Then I bought it as the third owner in less than a year and brought it 500km north. Sold it this Saturday to a guy who brought it back to the same town I bought it in. Kind of fun to know all that kind of stuff. That syncro is now on it's tenth owner and still has less than 160000km on it. Had a hard life thought.

If you look under your dash on the left hand side by the door you might find the Mcodes. Try this site
http://www.vw-mplate.com/mcode.php" on ... urn false;

I put my Westies details in and got all the info that VW are charging 35 euros for. :D

I think you can still get a list of previous keepers in the UK from the DVLA for a price.

http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/Motoring/Ow ... DG_4022067" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

It used to be free to get the info. As a teenager I remember being amazed that my FS1E DX had had fourteen owners in six years and the first one had written it off! Sometimes its better not to know :D
