What do you do with scrap parts?

Post by DoubleOSeven »

I assume the local recycling won’t take car parts, so what do you do with them? Keen to hear the ‘correct’ way of getting rid of this junk?

My local recycling will take anything, I have taken engine blocks, old mooring chain etc. there. Worth checking their website as to what you can dump.

My local recycling centre has a large scrap metal skip or if I can't be bothered, I message a local scrap man and he'll come and collect it. He is actually coming to collect a broken TV I have in the next day or two.

I just pop it all in my cellar and deal with it another day.
That said I have a Rover V8 engine in there and haven’t owned a Landrover for over 15 years!!
I call it collecting of precious.

around here we have people in vans cruising for scrap, if it's metal and you leave by the front gate it just disappears :ok

Have as much fun as possible with them.
I just replaced the washer bottle filler neck rubber connector.
Old one was leaking and perished.
However it is now holding a shade onto my LED reading light.

I'm sure you have metal fairies in your area.
They appear to be able to smell it round here. Leave it out and as if my magic, next day, it's gone.

I never encourage the ‘metal fairies’. If you give them any excuse to be there then you can guarantee that they’ll be taking a good look around to see what else of any value is worth a return trip for.

Call me tight if you like, but anything that can be ‘weighed in’ (even empty paint tins squashed flat!) gets put to one side until it’s worth the trip and then gets taken for scrap and exchanged for those lovely beer tokens.

What do you do with scrap parts?

I went to a scrap yard in the end near Aldermaston station, A4 Metal Recycling. They paid me £9.60 for my junk. Loads of commercial vans, lorries etc queuing up so it took 30 mins. Needed driving licence ID to register in office, then weigh, then dispose, then weigh, back into office to receive BACS payment. Wasn’t after any money, just wanted to dump some metal, bit of a faff! Came away thinking there must be a better way for them. I understand everything needs to be traceable to stop people stealing metal. Oh and needed a HI VIS waistcoat too. ^^^ None of this on their website, so had to wing it a bit.
My local scrap yard also has a metal skip but it’s for household items only. Can’t really see it being ok for engine parts, I’ll ask though, next time I’m up there.

Surely that wasn’t a bad result? Little bit of hassle and you’re a tenner better off! Also with the knowledge that the metal has been re-used and not gone to landfill.
The regulation of the scrap metal trade was brought about in an attempt to limit the theft of church roof lead, trackside railway signalling cables and national grid power cable. Not sure if it’s made a huge difference as there are plenty of unscrupulous scrap dealers.

Dont encourage the diddicoys. Take it to your local tip whilst out and about (I know they are all private outsourced contractors now but at least it gets recycled properly and employees pay taxes)
Dont make a special trip unless, like me, you hitch up a cycle trailer for the light stuff and they can't turn you away ;)
