Petrolly smell

Post by patrickpawsey »

Hi everyone,

After filling up the tank to the top, the last two times, I've noticed a strong petrol smell on the cab.

It seems to go away the next day. Just wondering what it's likely to be? And can I fix it easily?

The previous owner put on a new tank and lines, don't know about the filler neck.
Bromyard vw had the tank down to remove and debris from it (a bit of rag...) So I'm reasonably reassured the tank will have been reinstalled correctly.

Any tips appreciated!

Update, it's definitely coming from the passenger side, the one away from the filler side. Here are two photos of the underneath on that side

And one of the other side with the filter etcImageImageImage

Further update, I've realized I just sent pictures of the screen wash pipes, I think. You live and learn...

Thanks for the info, what should the be like? Presumably not blocked off with a bolt?

I have not looked at the manual about the fuel system but realise it's time ... Bit scared of petrol though!

Just reading the wiki, I'm guessing a breather pipe is broken? Which means fuel getting on the top of the tank when filling up and one side is full and it's spilling over to the other via the breather pipe over the top of the tank?

Maybe I've got that wrong

Mine is a bit different to that set up, instead of the line that goes straight from one expansion bottle to the other I have a short piece of pipe leaving each expansion bottle with a sort of a conical ending on it like the end of a trumpet or trombone, presumably venting of some sort? Possibly the pipe someone bunged the bolt into as referred to in a previous post?

I've just taken my tank out and replaced lots of rotten bits of overbraid hose for this reason (leaking when filled to the top). This blog post from James Akers is mega helpful https://vwt25.blog/2016/05/03/replacing-the-fuel-tank/.
