That only tells you the model year, 1988 for that one, which is Aug 87-July 88. the chassis no can narrow it down to which month using ETKA. The M plate is more accurate.

I know, but so far the PO hasn't actually coughed up his VIN, only a number from the V5 which is incomplete.
M plates mean nothing to DVLA either

OK, that makes things easier
I reckon it's a November 1979 van, probably made around 10th November.
DVLA don't care about the actual date, only the month.
I have dug out my Glass's books, and though they go to 1983 they don't cover commercial vehicles so I cannot help as directly as I hoped.
So alternatives are:
VW dating certificate
Letter from VW club RECOGNISED by DVLA
Letter from another organisation which is "approved" - there are commercial services doing what I did for free
I'll start keeping a lookout for the one that will give the answers for our T25's

Where would I find a vw club that would be recognised by the DVLA. Or any clubs that could give me proof. Is it worth contacting the DVLA anyway.

Beware, I think DVLA has now started looking at registration date, not manufacturing date from one post I read. Not necessarily in compliance with the legislation so you can find out for us.

How did you come to the conclusion that it is a November 10th 1979 van.

Interpolation of the month end chassis numbers from the website I linked to earlier
Follow Bigherbs instructions and you will discover the actual date

Chaps
https://www.volkswagen.co.uk/owners-and ... conformity
I e mailed the VW vehicle compliance dept 10 days ago with my chassis no
type.approval@vwg.co.uk and within a week received a heritage letter to confirm the date of manufacture of my van.
It was registered 24th March 1982on the v5 .......the date of manufacture came back as 05/01/1982
Slightly miffed that its 5th Jan 1982 - were it only 6 days earlier and I would be able to be tax and mot free from April 2001 earlier than expected
Thought it might help others who's vans are nearing that 40 yr threshold.
Best

Hi Matt, I could be wrong about this but I think the cut off date is the 7th of Jan. Not too sure if that's the registration deadline. Just been through the same with mine, I was the back end of January but at least it's now MOT exempt when it turned 40 earlier this year. I'm sure I got my date info off the .gov website.

Jed

It's based on manufacturing date
Registration date is a fallback, and that's where an 8 day grace period comes in.

You inspired me to check my build date (reg 3rd June ‘82) and it came back as 8th Jan ‘82.
A Friday...
Says a lot about my van!

Just a quick re-boot of an old post. I'm a little unclear of the full process of getting proof of build date, and getting the DVLA to accept it. My Danbury was registered in May 82, but the vin indicates a build date of July 81, so could save 12 months road tax.
I assume first step is to email vin number to
type.aproval@vwg.co. uk asking for proof of build date. But then what? I can't find a standard form
to make a change to the build date on the V11. Is it a case of getting comfortable and ringing the DVLA?
I guess more and more of us will be going through this in the coming years, so would be nice to get the process down as an idiots guide. After all, it's not just our vans that are getting older!
