Thoughts on powder coating

Post by Jonnyb416 »

Evening all,

Thought about getting my steel wheels and bumpers powder coated. Found a place nearby where the price seems ok. But a mate of mine said he personally isn’t keen on having it done. Mentioned, if it cracks, water can get in and obviously it will rot from the inside out.

What’s the general consensus on powder coating please?

Cheers, Jon.

FWIW, I went for paint not powder-coat, after getting the rims blasted. There was enough surface pitting to need a bit of work to get them looking decent. So a number of filler/primer layers were used starting with a good anti-corrosion primer. The main topcoat for the whole rim was a high gloss chassis-black. Believe it or not I used silver smoothrite for the topcoat on the outer surface, which is close enough to the original silver, quite durable, and can easily be topped up if needed.
