Mercedes 16" Alloys, Which Tyres?

Post by The Hairy Camper »

This post may annoy a few people, but here i go (again!).

I've basically mounted some 7x16, 5x112 Mercedes Alloys on my van (they have an ET of 37, but I have all the spacers, studs, bolts etc. from brickwerks sorted). :ok

The tyres on the alloys are knackered, and the load rating isn't great, so i've been looking through the forum (and the wiki), but have no clue what tyres to put on my van.

Most seem to settle on:
215/55/16
or
225/55/16

Or 215/55/16 on the front, and 225/55/16 on the rear!

This is new territory for me, so advice on what fits the van is much appreciated. My Van is standard height, no lowering etc.

Cheers,
HC

No one?

I'm considering 215/60/16 all round now? Apparently 225/55/16 is pushing it slightly for a 7" rim.

16" rims with A/T 235-70-R16 tyres.  I think they are 7" wide (I will check).
However probable not much use to you as the wheel arches and trailing arms have been modified so they fit.

Thank you Bat, very nice camper by the way. Syncro's are beautiful.

235 sounds a bit too wide for 16x7" Alloys? You may have 16x7.5"s or 16x8"s.

Appreciate your input though.

Wow, i wonder if you can get away with bigger AT tyres on a smaller rim?

Brickwerks says 215mm is the biggest for 6.5" rims:
http://www.brick-yard.co.uk/forum/tyre- ... 60146.html

The alloys are probably measured from the inner part? The tyre isn't going to go past the walls/lips of the rim.

I didn’t know Brickwerks had a tyre size chart, I think I went by what the tyre company’s web site said, the fitter seemed happy to supply and fit them.
So far I don’t seem to have had any problems with them, not taken them of road yet though, hope I’m not running on borrowed time.

I have been running 215/65/16 for a few years on 7j rims (mercedes steels). It's a standard height 2wd camper. So they're 27" diameter, with no rubbing anywhere, if that helps

Thanks slowcoach, that's a great help. I didn't think 215/65/16 would fit. I may give those a go :ok

I think they're the largest to fit without mods or lifting- If you have old springs, they may have sagged though so be warned. My springs are approx 7 years old. Wheels here are 37 offset also. Can't guarantee anything, just stating what I have

Do you not measure the width across the inside of the wheel where the tyre fits.
