10 year old tyres

Post by clone123 »

Hi can someone just confirm weather this does or doesn't apply to are Van's I did read something about commercial vehicles but I can't seem to find it now I could only find this.

From 1 February 2021 Construction and Use Regulations will not allow tyres aged over 10 years old to be used on the front steered axles of HGVs, buses, coaches or all single wheels fitted to a minibus (9 to 16 passenger seats). So, if used it will mean a dangerous fail at annual test and a prohibition.

It might be sensible to check what the manufacturer of your tyres says about lifespan. I know for our BFGs the recommendation is 0-5yrs no problem. 5-10yrs check regularly for signs of ageing, 10yrs+ it's recommended to replace.

The problem is that the rubber starts ageing as soon as the tyres are made, and so it doesn't really make much difference whether they've been in storage or on the vehicle, in terms of cracks and splits. I'm guessing that they've put in the age limitation because commercial tyres are often re-cut, and so just looking at whether the tread is worn wouldn't be enough to work out whether they need replacing.

The limitation has been brought in due to a horrendous fatal accident involving a passenger carrying vehicle that had 20+ ( I think) year old tyres and one or two failed.

It was this coach crash - the tyre that failed was nearly 20 years old, and had been falling apart inside for months, but because it had been in storage it was only half worn on the outside and so there was no way of knowing.

I put 7 new tyres on my Merc bus before I sold it as they were getting old although had plenty of tread. Better to be safe than sorry, I couldn't put someone at risk for a few £100.

So it took from 2013 to 2021 to get that change in the law ? Pathetic!

or it was a different incident ?

Neither would I put any ones life at risk . But I have no Intent on selling my van in the near future and it's only me who uses my van and like I said I have had them check over no cracking on the rubber at all all look good.
