Anyone have any experience on switching to larger wheels on a 1.6 non turbo? I'd like a bit extra top speed which I think that would help with, but don't want to kill the thing on any slight incline as it's bad enough as it is. Running stock 14 inch wheels currently

Easiest and cheapest is just larger tyres, use a tyre calculator to work out how much you want the circumference to increase by and fit tyres to suit.

Thanks, good suggestion.

I'm also looking specifically for anyone with experience doing this with a 1.6 non turbo diesel. No point going bigger if the engine won't handle the hills!

I have been running with 195 R14C for a few years with a 1.6D and have not had any problems. Yes it slows going uphill but never so much that it worried me.

Try this website, put your current tyre spec and gear ratios in and your old and new tyre sizes to find the comparison http://www.teammfactory.com/calculator

You can find your gear ratios here if you have your gearbox code...http://vwt3.com/t3-tech/t3-data/t3-gearbox-codes/

I have 205R14 tyre on mine and it slows going uphills but just have to be wary of it an change down early enough!!

top speed is still only about 60 though but a lot of that is down to my final drive it the box

this is mine with ABF box 5.83 final drive
