Home made VW centre caps for Merc steels

Post by andy e »

I thought I'd share this if it's of interest to anyone with Merc steels fitted. I've been looking for centre caps for my steels and made up these using 321601171A Mk1 Golf centre cap and 2K0601169 2003-onwards Caddy centre cap. All you need is a drill bit for a pilot hole, 76mm hole saw, black silicon and some adhesive. I drilled a small pilot hole through the back of the caddy then a larger one that was the same size as the pilot drill on the hole saw. Then turn the cap the right way up and cut the centre out with the hole saw, the golf cap will pop right in. I masked up the edge of the hole and about 5mm up from the bottom of the golf cap to make sure I didn't get epoxy resin everywhere when fixing them and also give me a good edge for the silicon. I was pretty happy with how they came out and hope the info is of use to someone.

Cheers Andy e

Fresh wheels too. Would you mind sharing with us what preparation and finish you've used? Ta.

Also, would this work for standard vw steels or are the pcd's different? Ta.

I bought the steels as is, I think the previous owner must have removed them quite quickly and replaced them with alloys. I'm fortunate that my younger brother lives in Germany and speaks it very well so when he's got the time he looks out for parts for me. I've not tried them against a standard steel but I'll try next time I see my mate.

I've tried the caps on standard wheels and they fit the rears but the fronts would need spacers, it's fine on mine as I've got a different brake/hub set up on the front.

By 'standard wheels', do you mean vw steels? Second question, what is this different set up that ye speak of?

The PCD must be the same or the wheels wouldn't fit.

Yes vw steels and as for brake set up I have a South African Microbus and my Doka has all South African running gear from a written off Microbus so the front hub and discs are different, thus giving the right spacing for the centre caps not to foul on anything.

Thanks for the input guys. So, as long as I use spacers with the steels, all should be well with this type of 'hub/nut cover'.

Would you mind saying what you paid for the bits please Andy? Cheers, mitch.

All in about £35/£40, the caddy caps were from a breakers, hole saw, sealant and glue were lying round the workshop so the only big cost were the golf caps which were off ebay.

Ok, tedious question time. To get these home brew centre caps to fit std steels, what is required in the way of spacers, nuts and bolts? Hate anyone to think I'm lazy, but.......

Cheers, Mitch.
