Spare wheel carrier

Post by Dazco »

Getting another lpg tank fitted to jambo in the spare wheel area at the front. I'm gonna have to mount the spare on the back door using a swing out type carrier( can't put it in the back cabinet as I have an lpg tank in there aswell ) . There's no way I can afford this http://www.vw-t3-bus-shop.de/eng/syncro ... ction.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
Any ideas for making one or links to any that have been made much apreciated.
I'm currently looking at a few on eBay for Toyota hilux which will require some modding.
Thanks, Daz

This was on the back of mine 'til I went back to 14s... gave it away last year.

It was attached to the bumper via the red brackets and hinged. I hated it but might give you an idea of how to fabricate something?

I have that here if you want to measure it up.

Also, might be worth looking at the old Kia Sportage. They had a swing out carrier that might be suitable for modifying to fit?

Slippy8v, I've already seen your rebuild thread, bang on dude. What's me is the carrier and is it T25 specific? Got any other details on it?
Up to now hilux swing out carrier is looking promising.

sold on EBay as spare wheel carrier for T25 syncro, no name or makers mark, looks home made just for the T25 tailgate. have to say a bit of thought was put into it just not cobbled together, the 2 top brackets look to be from a Fiamma bike carrier, these brackets can be bought on there own. if you where any way handy with a welder i can't see any real problems making one. if you want I can get you some more detailed pics and dimensions. To be honest Im surprised some one here did not own it. Also has a mount for a HI lift jack, again must have been a syncro owner.

just found the ebay add. checked out the sellers other items and he is selling a BMW bike theres an orange T25 in the background so some one might know it.

I like it. Do you have any issues opening the rear door ? Ie staying up, do you use anything to keep it up ( fnarrr fnarr) . Some close ups would be much appreciated.

put uprated rams (think i would need higher pressure ones)on the tail gate so lifts the 15 inch wheel ok but will not hold up so use a slide in support which just clips over the extend ram. I had a curved center support for my Fiamma awning but it got bent in gust of wind, so rather than bin it I made up a few strut supports from it for my Komet and for the syncro. These are nice simple fit and won't jump out once fitted. When not in use they have velco pads which allow me to keep them mounted on the rear cupboard in the Komet so always to hand.

Daz Think of the weight of the carrier and spare wheel on the tailgate.
I am not saying "dont buy" but think before you do.

phredd can't see the weight being any real issue, the carrier is not any heavier than the 3 bike Fiamma carrier I have on my Komet and I carry 3 adult mountain bikes on that which all weigh more than the spare for the syncro.

The number of welds in the construction could be reduced and the tubular frame could be bent to shape instead, also it could be made of aluminium tube to make it even lighter, but don't know how easy it would be to weld / join aluminium, i had thought of dropping it round to a local engineering works to see if a simpler construction in aluminium could be used and to cost it, could be a project for someone.
