Winter tyres on a high top, scotland??

Post by mell »

Hello all, especially those who know better than me (everybody when it comes to t25's). We are off to live in aviemore, scotland, our daily drive is in 'the colonel' a high top 30year old.
His tyres assessed by professionals in Devon as very good with deep tread etc. however we are thinking about putting winter tyres on the back, leaving the front for lidl chains if needed.
What does anyone think????- good plan; get front as well or stick with 4 summer tyres and chains.
We can drive in snow, having lived in the alps, albeit with an old SAAB with winter tyres on! But have no experience of RWD or T25 below 7degrees or on snow.
Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.....

Hi Mel and welcome, think there is a whole thread about winter driving further down the active topics where people have chatted about this just a couple of days ago.

Best of luck with the move :ok

Mate for the price fit, winters all around. You get to keep your existing tyres for the better weather remember. You lose nothing except a few pounds, but get added safety and a lot less aggro.

Regarding Aviemore, might be up there for a spot of camping between Christmas and New Year if there's any snow. :ok

never ever mix tyres front to rear like that, you could easily get into the situation where you have grip at the rear but none at the front and find yourself under-steering straight to the scene of an accident, get some decent winter tyres fitted and smile as you pass all the muppets in 4X4's with low profile useless tyres spinning and sliding 8)

Thanks 'Pionte', good point, i was thinking about hill traction etc, not slip grip- i'll stick 4 winters on and stop prevaricating about cost. ....Happy camping.
