rattling wheel trims

Post by lamb125 »

This is a weird one. I've a set of original chrome hub caps fitted to my '87 transporter, the front O/S one 'clatters' although it appears to be a tight fit and requires a screwdriver to prise it off. When removed there is no noise. Yes, wheel bolts are tight and there is no movement in the hub. Anyone experienced this?

Are you sure they are the correct ones, the early beetle caps fit but are shallower. You could try swapping the noisy one with one from another wheel to see if the noise continues.

Hi, I did as you suggested and haven't noticed the noise since, but then again the noise didn't appear until well into a journey. I took the wheel off to check for any movement in the hub and calliper but there's nothing untoward. Occasionall the calliper does bind a little and creates heat build-up which I'm wondering may be causing the hub cap to distort under the heat and rattle?
