Interior lining

Post by TONYT25T25 »

The interior lining on my camper has been breaking down for some time, It appears to be turning to dust in some areas when you brush against it.  Its been in place since the conversion I suspect.  Its been hoovered but still forms a fine dust in some areas when you brush against it or in an attempt to clean it.  Recently sprayed some areas with a sealant used to waterproof fabrics in an attempt to restrict the breakdown which maybe working.  Replacing the whole lot would be a mammoth task as it covers the whole of the interior, roof, panels etc, is there some sort of other solution that can be used, :?:

Better to just redo it, it's a hassle of a job but as long as you take pictures of how it's been put together replicating it with new stuff isn't difficult.

Thanks some areas look easier than others, ie side panels but the roof looks as if it was sprayed on as it looks so well done.

On mine the front head lining had a seam sewn in that was stapled to a wooden lath that went across the width of the roof and also had wooden strips along the sides running above the doors along the length of the van where the curtain rails screwed into. Replicating the front meant getting out the sewing maching and remembering how to use it. Leisuredrive had some odd ways of doing interior stuff back then.

The sides and back were fairly simple just spray glue and replicating what they had done. It is quite easy to get a very nice looking finish a bit fiddily though. The fabric I used is a 4 way stretch which is good because you can pull it into shape but it's also a bit of a bugger as it can stretch and sag if you don't get it right, not a big problem just lots of fettling.

I'm not 100% happy with what I've done in mine so far, so I will be revisiting bits.

Been looking at the stretch material in my case Barley colour seems to be the best comparison, I think this job maybe going into the same drawer/filing cabinet as the Electric Power steering conversion my MOT garage hints at when they have to manoeuvre the Camper into the garage.  :) In meantime still looking for some sort of sealant.

That's fair enough, I got my stuff from harrison trim supplies. Eh, wimps it's not that heavy to turn!
No clue on anything sealant wise, your carpet sounded like mine when you'd brush past it it was like confetti, plus it was faded. To my shock I thought it was a light grey colour til I found a bit that wasn't sun bleached and it was a cream! I ended up ordering a light grey anyway as the cream looked like a 70's kitchen.

Thanks again, still stumped as to how it was originally applied, the interior of the roof, which is a Devon Side elevating, has a continuous application without any gaps or joins giving the appearance of being sprayed on and is so thin, same as the side bits around the windows etc. The same application was around the seats which I replaced with a thin carpet as they were more easily to remove and replace even though with a different colour.

The roof will be glued on, I haven't tackled mine yet as mine is also a side elevation roof, most is glued to the bodywork so it's a bit messy to take off. Wear a mask to be sure if you do it!

Need to tackle this one myself! The old lining was taken off and then replaced but the job was really badly done and I’ve had to ask them to rip it out, leaving me to do it!

There is an inch gap all the way round the windows and I can’t see how I’m going to get a decent finish. Anyone any ideas? Cheers.

Mine was like that the lining was put under the seal. To replicate it on my slide window I had to take the window out and glue the lining around the window edge and trim it back a bit then put the window back in. There is also the inner window seals you can use to close the gap.

My Devon Conversion has fiberglass window inserts to fill the gap around the window. The one pictured is over the cooker and sink so is vinyl covered. The window seal sits over the top of the one pictured. The rest are covered in carpet and just sit up against the seal.

Maybe you could bond a strip of stiff plastic around the aperture so it extends the edge up to the window seal and then cover that with carpet?
