External diesel heater

Post by MagicWagon »

I'm looking to fit a diesel heater under/outside the van. I've bought a nice stainless steel box with all the holes and a lid etc. but I'm struggling to find somewhere suitable to put it with enough clearance to get the lid off and for all the pipes etc.
Has anyone got one mounted externally as I'd love to see some pictures or just an idea where you've fitted it. Cheers.

Hello,
Yes I have dne this on my 1980 air-cooled.
I think I did a post on it way back, but search is not currently available.
I still have all the picks.
Basically mounted in a modified MOD tool box, under the rhs sliding door, just in front of the crossmount, so only 1 hole for the 80mm pvc drainpipe outer
cover to enter the vehicle. Fuel tank and battery inside the vehicle.
Takes no internal space, makes no noise, uses 1 litre in about 4 hrs. 2KW

Lid goes on the bottom/side depending upon box and heater lies on its side - you can't use an Eberspacher though as they cannot be used on their sides unlike Webastos.

Hello,

Here you go :

http://forum.club8090.co.uk/viewtopic.p ... 77&start=0" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Since then I have changed to a 2kw chinese knock off, only because I wanted rid of the 24volt step up system.

Identical in all dimensions to the Eberspacher, and because the controller is more sophisticated, having a low voltage shut off, I have wired
the heater directly to the leisure battery, keeping the main low volts cut off unit for the rest of the van, avoiding any sensor conflict at start up
when you need 15 amps for about 5 mins.

The only issue I have had in 2 years was having to clean out the jet, easy to do , same as the Eber. Consider servicing access when you fit.

I can check mine on the hoist when doing the brakes.

As I say, 2 years on the solar/battery/portable compressor fridge/diesel heater set up is working fine.

Even parked behind my school bus with little direct sunlight, the batteries are always charged.

I am starting an interior refit, so will post some more photos.

Hope this helps..

Cordialement,
