Under-slung gas install

Post by Dobble »

Hi Guys

We're looking to install an under-slung gas tank on our Syncro to free up some cupboard space and we're not sure which system would be best for our application. The obvious choice would be a Westy tank but these are quite old now and I'm not sure about the internal integrity of a unit that's 30+ years old. I've seen generic under slung tanks online but does anyone have any direct experience of any of these units on a T25?

We'd be running a cooker off the tank and in the future a propex heater. We'd also like to have an auxiliary take of for a BBQ or gas shower etc.

Any input would be gratefully received.

Cheers
Ben

I fitted an old westy one 3 months ago and in works like a dream, fixing arms are there ready for you to install, just have to take fridge out drill thru and bolt it up, approx 1m of copper pipe straight to manifold, jobs a gooden.
I did try looking around for new one to be fitted but alot a companys wont fit it due to clearance. Not saying there isn't companys that do it but I didnt have much joy and a old westy one popped up so went with that.
Defineltly worth doing I now have big leisure battery in place left by moving gas.

I have a westy underfloor tank and before I refitted it a couple of years ago it was refurbed and the steel is 12mm or more thick , the outer may have been rusty but the tank is clean on the inside and no danger of it not doing its job.
I wouldn’t even think twice , they are much thicker than the aftermarket ones

There is no issue with ground clearance for domestic tanks either , COP11 only pertains to road fuel tanks iirc

Ok cool I'll have a look for a Westy one. There is one on Ebay so I may take a look at that as I'm working up north this week. What sort of price do they usually go for?

How long is a piece of string ...
Depends how greedy the seller is , normally about £100 - £150

Make sure you get the regulator or at least the adaptor needed for a standard regulator

A paid 200 for mine (greedy dealer) but with the money I save it pays for itself in no time. Good luck

Parts are still available from Günzl for the Westy tanks, if you need to get any new taps, valves, etc

That's good to know, thanks for that. I'll put a wanted advert out in a mo as the one off Ebay was a non starter.

I was looking at a new one myself but they are a bit more than a 30 year old rusty one.

Thanks Paul. I've literally just been looking at the Gas IT tanks and also the tanks available from Tinley Tech. Someone had put a link to them on another thread.

The Gas IT tanks have the brackets welded on rather than using straps which I think would be a good option. I've just been measuring the van and it's surprising how low they sit at 200mm diameter.

I think I would rather buy the new one than waste 200+ on a rusty old one

To be honest Rick I'm leaning the same way, there's two on Ebay both of which are over £200 and a new tank can be had for not much more. I might also get a price for a professional to do a complete fit.
