Early LPG tank Vs newer?...
Hi Chaps
I've attached 2 photos (hopefully). One set show the fittings from a 1990 Westy. The other are from an unknown Westy tank.
If you look closely you will see that one pic has a float on the fill adaptor, whilst the other doesn't.
You'll also notice that the one which doesn't have the float also has an additional adaptor with a long insert (bleed valve).
So my question...
I have had the unknown Westy tank blasted and painted, and wondering which fittings to use.
My gut feeling is to go for the later fittings (the set with the filler float cut off), and block the bleed valve hole.
What would you do?
Also, how are you supposed to fill using the fittings with the bleed valve?
Really hope this makes sense!
Thanks in advance and can't wait to get cooking again

Also...
What is the correct orientation for the fill adaptor with the float? It must be one of two positions?
Anybody know?

Fill adaptor should have 'top' stamped onto the brass fitting.
mine has to ensure you fit it the correct way and it does its job.

No probs
What did you use to make your joints, ptfe tape/liquid ptfe?
I have done my tank too but not refitted and refilled yet (undersealing that section of the van whilst I can get access 1st!).
Let us know how you get on any leaks or problems etc..

Re: Early LPG tank Vs newer?...
Hi, I refurbished the vapour tank on my Westy recently. The one thing I replaced new was the nylon washer of the contents guage. If you're in any doubt, give Steve at Gasure.UK. a quick ring.
Max.

I used liquid ptfe. It was blue in colour and had been used by someone on this forum but can't remember who.craigy345 wrote:rockthebus wrote:Thanks. How did I miss that!craigy345 wrote:

I have that one on my van.
According to the label around the bleed valve it says in German to open valve while filling and stop filling when liquid comes out !
Not sure whether that is another thing ignored by early 1980's health and safety regs as gas will be escaping while you fill. Sometimes it works fine though - other times the gas pours out as soon as the pump is turned on.
Very interesting to see the insides though and confirms the old style tank does not shut off at 80%. Also explains why mine sometimes shows above 80% after a fill.

I just didn't fancy the idea of the valve leaking, or pouring on me whilst filling. It must be dam cold and could burn!
Glad I went for plugging the hole and using my existing fittings with the 80% shut off valve

Yep thats exactly the same as the stuff I used.
(purchased from tool station)
I had used it for some normal plumbing around the home and was impressed, so went with this + some PTFE tape for the van LPG joints.
rockthebus Have you filled your tank with LPG yet, all OK?
Thanks.

Update:
Filled today. No issues what so ever except it slightly overfilled past 80% or so that gauge shows. Yes a working gauge! All soaped up and no leaks. Cooking on gas!
