sealant
after welding up the top corner of tailgate shut as everytime it rained the back of van fills up with water,i noticed that the gutter of my hightop has some sort of sealant in it which had perished,what type of sealant is it or could I just use silicon.

Most likely a polyurethane adhesive/sealant. Something like tiger seal perhaps? Although pu18 is cheaper and practically the same stuff, we have used PU18 on the boat and it has stood 2 years in the water so far without perishing.

No problem, I bought 3 more tubes last week to redo the seal on our sheldon hightop.
You will need to remove any old sealant before reapplying. Use a scraper or removal tool carefully to remove the bulk then a solvent based remover..the one I have used is:

If your van is painted with cellulose based paint then mask it very well as it may damage cellulose. It is however safe on fiberglass and two pack

the old sealant is just rattling loose in the gutter that's my next job then might even get away this year thanks buddy
