Aidan has very kindly asked me to build him a replacement engine for his syncro Edna, I thought it warranted a little thread so here we go again...
This engine originally lived in Neil's H-reg Japanese-assembled rhd Doka (before he went all Scandowegian) First owned by the National Trust at Scotney Castle in Kent, full factory servicing for many years so I guess Aidan was hopeful that it would be a good buy. Let's find out, shall we?
After spending a couple of hours digging it out from under a cake of grit, soil, sand, mud, oil, grease, wax etc (offroad engines!) remove the rocker gear first. Something's up with the flywheel-end inlet cam lobe, both tappet screws are distressed:

After a cursory scrub-down it looks pretty good for a bare motor:

First pull of the heads, looking tasty for a 22-year old unrestored engine:

Both sides are bloody perfect :D

However the RH head is in a bad way (pity as the guides all look really good) A blowing exhaust has eroded this gasket face:

A badly-fitted Time-sert, about 5mm proud, can't have helped this cylinder get it's spark:

But all in all not too bad. One sheared bellhousing stud, sump plug already oversize and in a bit of a state, some wear on the waterpump face where it's let go in the past; that's about it until I split the case and see what's inside...

it will be interesting to see what is going on inside this engine, the oil pressure was a bit on the low side when i had it. good too see the studs were in good nick. the heads were always a cause for concern.

Am I wondered why Aidan hadnt been "on my case...." :rofl

Better get them parts I dropped of before xmas sorted then.. and I#ll get the order in for the micrometers and parts..... :ok

Ok Si, there's a batch of rods to do now so cost savings come into play :wink: Just got to find the part number for the ARP rod bolts as they will be a non-stock order.

Definitely. Now the worst of the crud is scraped off...I'm sure Aidan did that on purpose after my syncro gearbox arrived "au naturelle" :lol:

Latest news: Pistons put up a right good fight yesterday, lots of Propane and penetrating oil. Unfortunately I can get a 0.15mm feeler up the side of the top (chrome) ring, so they are bin material. That explains all the carbon!

Since this one is going to spend most of it's life on LPG, I'd go for DJ-spec 10.5:1 compression replacements but that's up to AJT and what's still available.

A little more news:

Bad news, both heads have gaping cracks between the seats :(

Rods have quite a lot of side play too, that explains the low oil pressure.

Cam looks fair but I'm peering into the gloom. We'll see in a bit...

Cam lobes have gone through their case hardening, all about the same so I can't explain why the two flywheel end inlet tappet screws are 'shroomed :?

The elusive syncro-specific labyrinth front crank seal. It's still soft and rubbery but clearly knackered, judging by the mess on the engine!

A word of caution for other wbx-builders. This engine came to me undressed i.e. nothing on it. not even a flywheel or distributor. It's best to leave the dizzy on the engine if you can, otherwise with the distributor removed the worm gear rides up and gouges the brass timing wheel. Unfortunately, I had no control over it's "undressing" and it's now marked in several places. Not wrecked, but a bit of a shame:

The big ends are definitely quite worn, but the mains look good along with the cam bearings. The oil pump's not bad either! Time to strip the rods and get those new Chevy rod bolts sorted...

Rods... :ok Need some more to make up the numbers?? I can sort them this weekend...

I'll be getting 2 of my cases off to the vapour blaster in a couple of weeks..

Heads out of the 10 or 12 pairs I am not sure there are any that dont have a fault of some kind.. I found a refurbed source in Germany, but trying to find out if they are exchange or outright... At the mo, new ones are a bit too costly...

I'll Mic up the cranks I have and see whats what.. :ok

Reminds me of my Formula VW engine building days ..... getting good genuine German heads was a problem then as the Mexican heads were rubbish

Hi Ian. About to split my case tomorrow. Can I buy into any work being done on rods please? Always providing mine have enough enough life left in them... :? :? I think that I have a new set of bolts but will be posting about these later.

I have just bought a couple of sets of BB Chevy rod bolts to get things moving, that's enough for 4 wbx sets. ARP 2000 spec, good for 500hp per cylinder or some such madness, no-one here is going to break them with a wbx that's for certain!
To give an indicator on current costs, the rod bolts come in at about £10 per rod plus machining time but imho it's cheap insurance for any 2.1 driven like Miss Daisy or not!
Big-end eye re-sizing is £15 per rod based on an engine set. Essential once the bolts have been upgraded as there's no guarantee that the cap will line up or be round anyway.
So budget a good ton to sort your rods IF the little ends are OK. IMLE they don't seem to wear much at all.

I note from your thread that MV's have lower comp pistons than DJ ones,would this help to reduce emissions combined with the cat? I ditched my cat and fitted a ss exh.and now have loads more power than original 95.Don't know if i'ts up to 112(doubt it)! but seems to have plenty of low down grunt.(more torque)?? Any info greatfully recieved :D
