Drain plug magnet

Post by Syncronorth »

This is from a 1985 syncro 180000km where the previous owner who had it since 1987 don't think the oil has been changed before. Does it look normal or should I start thinking about a rebuild?

At that mileage without an oil change.. I'm no expert but I'd say a rebuild might be on the cards.

I bet its a diesel van! That is quite furry and the iron filings are probably off the crownwheel & pinion head. It's ripe for a rebuild imho

Given the mileage since the last  oil change, I'd say that's perfectly normal, if not rather good, and not necessarily any cause for concern. There are no fragments suggesting any damage has occurred. If the box isn't unduly noisy and functions properly, then its probably not suffered any undue wear or damage. However given the age and mileage it wouldn't be unreasonable to carry out an R&R on the box. If you can afford it, go for it. If not, refill with fresh GL4 and carry on.

E D I T: Looking at the pic again, I'd suggest having a poke at that lump on the left , it may just be a wodge of steel powder, but if it has a larger piece inside it, something has broken up.
