My Kombi resto

Post by syncroandy »

I've not been on here much of late so I've a bit of catching up to do ! My Kombi (which I've owned since 2003) has been off the road for a couple of years undergoing rather long drawn-out restoration work. It started out as an engine-out job to sort an engine issue, but then I realised some rust behind the tank needed dealing with, so it all escalated a bit... I've ended up sorting out a number of bits of bodywork, and innumerable other issues, major and minor, along the way. I've got lots of pics to share, which will save a good few words. It's all a bit much to cover adequately in a single post, so I'll break it down into a few posts. For starters here's a teaser pic of where I'd got to a couple of weeks ago.

(Sorry for the link, but image linking on the new forum seems not to be working, and I'm not OK with Imgur terms of use so can't use that. I'll try and get something sorted for all the other pics I want to share.)

Great photo Andy, a lot of work done there, 2.5 scooby?

What paint did you use on the hubs and the box & engine?

Cheers chaps. Yes it's a 2000MY EJ251, the first variant with a single lambda. On its 3rd. set of HG's, MLS this time, hopefully these will fare better than the previous ones.

Believe it or not, I used some 'vintage' Hammerite I got from a local motor factor who was downsizing his stock range. It's 'retro' ;) Anecdotally it should be OK for this purpose, but time will tell. I've an old bit of test gear I made for an HND assessment in the mid '80's that I painted in Hammerite and its lasted really well, so fingers crossed..

That'll be "proper" Hammerite, xylene solvent (just a whiff makes me feel sick, got sensitised to it a long time ago)
