Help needed: fuel leak filler pipe seal to tank. Chester

Post by AIR_CHILLED »

I have just arrived at a campsite in Chester (120 miles from home) and the fuel was pouring out. The fuel tank rubber seal to metal filler pipe has failed. It looks like it’s coming from the around the outside and not metal pipe to seal.
Is there anyone local who has a spare or can source one quick?
Has anyone done a emergency field repair on one to get you home or out of the dessert even?
Any help would be very much appreciated at the moment as we’re stuck until we can figure out what to do.
Does anyone know what the part number is also?

With some help I believe it’s this part number:
251201139A
Fits both 2wd and Syncro fuel tanks from what I can see so should in theory be easy to source locally in Chester.

If you have a van or caravelle then it is the same seal as late 2WD tank. If you have a doka or sika
then it is the same as early 2WD tank seal.

Should the seal be bonded to the tank or is it fitted dry?

Doesn't need to be bonded to the tank as far as I am aware. I didn't bond mine and it's been leak free so far.

I have found that the new seals are either a bit too hard or a bit too small which often leads to leaks. This can be exaggerated when you fit a new fuel tank, they seem to be made off slightly thinner metal.

Either keep and refit the old seal or find am alternative.

I also have to drop my tank and sort this out which is a pain as I no longer have access my yard/barn.

Thanks for your information, good to know for the future.
I have just driven up to Manchester after taking the seal out and gluing it back together. It was a drip rather than pouring it.
Manchester GSF had one in stock so fitted it in their car park.
Now back on the road, five very happy campers :)

Thanks for all your help and suggestions!
Cheers,
Mike.

Just to add that the seal was split. It was an original vw seal. I have since replace it with aftermarket but will buy a genuine at the next opportunity.
Fitted only with silicone grease to help with assemble.
Interested to know what sealants are fuel resistant for future fuel related repairs?

Reinzosil is described as highly or very fuel resistant iirc
Its pretty much impervious to everything once cured.
Otherwise it's good old Hylomar (alcohol solvent)

Thanks Ian that’s really useful to know.
I have Hylomar with me in the van in my emergency supplies so this I could of used to a fashion.
Cheers.
